A Career Counsellor will support you in your career development. This means being able to manage your career, make good career decisions and navigate the constant changes and surprises that your professional life throws your way (like a pandemic, for instance…).
The service provided by a Career Counsellor will differ depending on your circumstances, your needs and your goals. This could include application of career development theory, career assessment tools, research strategies, job search strategies and other coaching methods to support improvement in work, life and performance.
Your career is the sum of your many experiences, roles and identities. So, a Career Counsellor may also consider other lifestyle factors (ummm, burnout much?!) that could be holding you back from being your most brilliant self. (That’s my style, btw.)

Hmmm, it really depends on the individual practitioner, but here are some generalisations:
A Career Counsellor has to complete a high level of study, typically a Graduate Certificate level or above (on top of a Bachelor degree or higher). Check out my credentials here. The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) is the peak body for Career Practitioners in Australia. CICA stipulates which courses are endorsed to ensure that their registered practitioners are of the highest standard. A Life Coach can achieve their credentials through a much shorter course, that doesn’t necessarily include university level study.
Career Counsellors are focused on helping you with your career and professional life. Life Coaches assist with aspects of your personal life, which may include aspects of your work.
Career Counsellors are authorised to apply specific models, assessments and tools as part of their counselling process. Life Coaches will use questions and prompts to uncover patterns in your thinking or behaviour. (Career Counsellors do that too, but with a theoretical understanding).
Career Counsellors will refer you to other services if required, to ensure your health and safety is prioritised. This might look like a referral to your GP, or to community-based services that meet your needs (such as housing, mental health, financial support etc.)
I have a Graduate Certificate in Career Development Practice from the Australian Centre for Career Education (prev. CEAV). I’ve also completed a Cert IV in Career Development with the same institution. This means I can be a Professional level member of the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA) (I’m the Tasmanian Division President as well!).
CICA outlines the Professional Standards to which Career Practitioners must adhere. This includes Ethical guidelines. When we start working with each other, I will start with an ethical disclaimer that basically states anything we discuss is confidential. But if I’m worried that you or someone close to you is at risk of harm, then I’m obliged to contact the relevant help services.
Yes! I can show you job search techniques, as well as how to access the hidden job market *wink, wink* *nose tap*
Yes! Depending on why you want to update it, we can tailor your Resume accordingly.
Sure can! I have some great strategies for helping you crack the Selection Criteria code. You'll stand out from the rest of the competition.
I'd love to! Preparing for interviews is all about removing the unknowns so that you feel confident to tell your story.
This is the best fun! We might consider your transferable skills, further education and training, salary expectations, lifestyle factors, or short and long-term goals. It’s a biggie, but I got your back on this one. Life’s too short, right?!
It would be my pleasure to help lift you out of this feeling of ‘stuckness’ (yep, it’s a thing). We will consider all aspects of your career and lifestyle and get you back to healthy-happy you.
Absolutely can.
I don't have a Recruiter's candidate pool to dip into. But I can give you insight into how to attract and retain your desired talent. I'm working with amazing clients all the time, so it may be that one of them is your next superstar.
Yes! And I really, really want to help you do that. They are a unique and diverse bunch with a world view to match. Who can blame them?! They have lived through the biggest chance factor of our times. Let me improve your approach so that young people want to work for you, for the long-term.
Yes, sure can. Holistic career guidance is likely the missing piece to happy, healthy and loyal employees. Let’s chat some more about that.
Am I?! Mate - the bigger the crowd, the better! All joking aside, presenting and speaking is one of my favourite things to do. (Could be all those years as a teacher? Could be all those years on stage?) If you have a conference requiring a keynote or professional learning session, please get in touch. I can also design bespoke corporate workshops and series to meet the needs of your participants.
